The role holder will assist the Head of Communications and Policy Engagement with delivering excellent media coverage for IPSE, as well as developing policy positions and articulating these to external policymakers, members of staff and IPSE members.
Main duties: Develop, research and promote IPSE’s policy positions – in line with the organisation’s strategic goals. Developing lines, identifying positive story opportunities, and preparing proactive statements, press releases and comment. Own key policy areas designated by the Director of Policy (currently includes Covid support, tax changes, employment status, late payment, Universal Credit) and be able to advise senior management and members as required. Preparing, handling and delivering plans and briefings on high-profile and complex issues, often to short deadlines and under pressure. Write and maintain policy guides and information for members and the wider self-employed on IPSE’s website. Develop and maintain contacts in government departments, especially the Treasury and BEIS. Help to develop IPSE’s response to consultations and major policy events such as the Budget and Autumn Statement. Work with the marketing team to source case studies for press and policy work where relevant. Help to prepare IPSE’s newsletter. Copy-editing and proof-reading content from across the business as required. Contributing to out of hours media work as required. Attending external meetings and events as required
Experience: Degree or equivalent qualification. At least two years’ experience in policy / press / PR or journalism. Must be an excellent communicator both in writing and orally. Excellent understanding of the UK Parliament and political system. Exceptional writing skills, able to quickly produce quality copy for a range of different audiences. Experience of writing policy papers, economic reports, briefings or similar for a variety of audiences including senior executives, politicians and the public. Experience of networking, influencing and building effective relationships within a complex organisation. Proven track record of securing high-profile national media coverage.
