Job Details

We are looking for a Parliamentary Officer to join the Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns team at Samaritans. As Parliamentary Officer you will develop and maintain effective relationships with UK parliamentarians to further our policy and influencing aims and increase awareness of the charity’s work.

  • Ewell, Surrey; with some travel to Westminster and days working from home

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships across the Westminster parliament, including with relevant spokespeople and committees
  • Support the work of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Suicide and Self Harm Prevention, providing the secretariat for the Group and ensuring an engaging programme of meetings across the year
  • Work across the External Affairs Department to ensure that Samaritans research and policy analysis is presented in the most impactful way to influence parliamentary debate
  • Represent Samaritans externally, including providing oral and written briefings to parliamentary audiences
  • Provide written briefings and other support for senior Samaritans staff interactions with political stakeholders
  • Work with colleagues in the devolved nations and Republic of Ireland, keeping abreast and contributing to distinct and co-ordinated public affairs activity

The Person

  • Recent experience of working within, or to influence, the Westminster Parliament
  • Understanding of UK governments and parliaments, and how to influence on both devolved and reserved issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build rapport with people at all levels, including specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Experience representing an organisation with senior external stakeholders
  • Good project management and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to use initiative
  • Experience of working in a field relevant to suicide prevention or the current health and social care political environment (desirable)
