The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the trade association that supports the Scotch Whisky industry. The industry’s vision is to ensure Scotch Whisky continues to be the world's undisputed premier whisky and consumers' spirit of choice.

The position

Working within the Strategy and Communications team and as head of the engagement unit, the successful candidate will advise on and deliver the strategic engagement plan and deal with political engagement across the UK, developing and maintaining relationships in Scotland, including MSPs and political party staff, Scottish Government ministers, officials, special advisors and key external organisations.

The position involves, without being limited to, leading on the SWA compliance with the lobbying register; monitoring Scottish Parliament debates, legislation and committee work which relates to the industry and developing submissions and briefings as appropriate; working with the Deputy Director to develop an strategic engagement plan across Westminster and Holyrood; supporting the CEO political engagement and developing opportunities for SWA teams and members to engage with stakeholders.

The applicant

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate:

• Working knowledge of the Scottish Parliament, including committee structure and legislative process.
• Existing network of contacts in the Scottish Parliament across political parties.
• Excellent political judgement and understanding of the political environment.
• Track record of influencing stakeholders and working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
• Experience of writing submissions to Parliament and monitoring the progress of legislation.
• Ability to work constructively as a member of a team and positively challenge colleagues to develop robust policy positions.

Candidates who match the following desirable criteria will be preferred:

• Existing network of contacts in the Scottish government, including officials and special advisors.
• Previous experience with lobbying register compliance, working with Cross Party Groups and in support roles for MSPs, Scottish government ministers and/or in senior public affairs roles.
