Job Title: Freelance Political/Security Risk Editor

Working For: Falanx Assynt Ltd

Location: Remote

Salary: Negotiable freelance rate

Length of Contract: 3-6 months with potential for extension

Job Details

We are seeking a part-time political and security risk editor to work on our flagship intelligence product, the Assynt Report, which is an analytical service for companies operating in emerging markets. It focuses on security, terrorism, political and economic stability, and the ways in which these issues affect commercial and operational environments.

We are partiuclarly keen to hear from applicants with demonstrable subject matter expertise in South-East Asia, though we would also welcome applications from those with expertise in South Asia, the Former Soviet Union, or Sub-Saharan Africa.

As an editor, you will provide guidance and content direction to analysts producing our fortnightly reports on a set range of countries. You will have access to our extensive in-house resources to support this. You will also be responsible, with support from our editorial team, for making sure reports meet house style requirements.

In practical terms the process will involve: receiving and reviewing an analyst’s report plan; holding a call with them, typically the following morning, to discuss the report’s contents; editing the report that day to align with the house style and to direct the analyst to address any remaining analytical gaps/queries; reviewing the analyst’s second draft; and submitting the report to the in-house editing team for publication. The process is typically spread across three days (Monday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Friday). This can be adjusted somewhat if needed, but the ability to meet deadlines within UK working hours will be essential.

Key Requirements

- Demonstrable expertise in at least one of the above-mentioned regions. Providing analytical guidance is a core component of this job, so successful applicants must be able to direct analysts with less regional expertise.

- Exceptional writing skills. These, along with country/region expertise, will be assessed via writing samples and a pre-interview test.

- Evidence of the ability to learn and edit to rigorous house standards.

- Familiarity with the interests and concerns of businesses and policymakers.

Closing Date: 30 September 2021
