Job Title: Constituency Assistant

Job Details

The Constituency Assistant will provide advice and support to Mike’s constituents on a range of issues, including housing, welfare and immigration. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Dealing with volumes of casework queries and assisting on more complex cases from constituents by phone, email or face to face. Ongoing communication may be required
  • Responding to constituents, ensuring that each case or enquiry is dealt with promptly, sensitively, confidentially and accurately in accordance with the MP
  • Gathering relevant information to assist with resolving cases
  • Logging all cases; monitoring progress and ensuring all identified actions are taken
  • Critically analysing patterns of enquiries and articulating the findings in reports and communication with the MP and other staff members
  • Ensuring that the MP is briefed and fully equipped to the highest standard for all engagements
  • Carrying out research, obtaining briefings and all detail relating to all constituency engagements
  • Assisting the MP at advice surgeries, digital meetings, events and visits
  • Undertake research for parliamentary debates and questions, draft parliamentary questions
  • Meeting follow up for all engagements; letter writing and following up on actions, ensuring all actions are undertaken by all parties
  • Attending meetings in place of MP where appropriate and accompanying MP to meetings and note-taking
  • Ensuring personal records are kept and information managed confidentially in line with the data protection legislation

There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally

Skills required

  • Previous casework experience and knowledge is essential
  • Ability to deal with and prioritise a large and varied caseload, and to work well under pressure
  • Ability to manage expectations of constituents in sometimes challenging circumstances
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Good IT skills including using a casework system and MS Office Applications
  • Ability to draft letters and emails to a high professional standard
  • Be willing to undertake training
  • Motivated to work independently as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a small team
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of The Labour Party

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
