Job Details

Are you interested in bringing your communication and media skills to an organisation that plays a vital role in the democratic process?

The successful candidate
We are looking for a proactive and engaged public relations and communications professional to help raise our profile and deliver a high-quality press office service for the Electoral Commission.
The Electoral Commission is the independent body that oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. It works to promote public confidence in the democratic process and to ensure its integrity.

You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, on your own initiative, as well as part of a collaborative and dynamic team. You will have media and communications experience and be looking for the next step in your career. Ideally, you will already have experience of drafting press releases, media briefings, and comment pieces to a high standard; implementing proactive and creative PR strategies; and media evaluation.

The role
As a member of our press team, you will work closely with our media relations manager, the wider external communications team, and Commission colleagues to prepare press releases on our regulatory, policy, and voter information work. You will be responsible for responding to national and local media inquiries, building effective working relationships with a range of external stakeholders, including senior national political journalists, and preparing Commission spokespeople for press meetings and interviews.

The Commission plays a vital role in maintaining the legitimacy of our democracy, working across the four nations of the UK. It works closely with parties and campaigners to create a strong culture of compliance and ensures the processes of registering voters, and casting votes, are carried out rigorously and transparently. You will join the team that is the voice of the Commission in the media.

Working at the Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission offers excellent terms and conditions, including flexible working hours and the opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements (dependent on scheme rules) which include a valuable range of benefits.
