Job Details

Sarah Owen is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to run her Westminster office.

Sarah was first elected as the Labour MP for Luton North in 2019. She is an active campaigner in Parliament and in Luton on issues like the NHS, workers' rights and equalities issues.

Sarah sits on the Health and Social Care Select Committee, and is part of Labour's Opposition Whips team. She also serves on APPGs including Baby Loss, Social Care and Kashmir.

In this role, you will:

  • manage the Westminster diary
  • manage and organise the MP's email inbox, delegating messages to colleagues
  • horizon-scan, anticipating what advice or action may be required; proactively identify problems and resolve them
  • maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, including impact on Luton
  • deal with complex queries from constituents and stakeholders on the MP's behalf, including drafting and signing letters
  • deal with security matters
  • prepare and present results for the purposes of briefing notes for committees, parliamentary questions and debates
  • draft speeches, questions, editorials and press releases
  • draft social media posts, including video editing, for Sarah's social media
  • respond to routine correspondence and enquiries from constituents, the media and campaign organisations
  • supervise projects and staff as required
  • engage with internal and external stakeholders, attending meetings as appropriate
  • support general admin
  • support Sarah in her role as a Whip, her committee work, and work with APPGs
  • manage the Westminster and Luton office budget via IPSA

The right person must:

  • as this is a senior role, have at least 1 or more years' experience working for an MP or in a political role
  • have sharp and astute political judgement
  • have strong written and verbal communication skills, with outstanding attention to detail
  • be confident in identifying opportunities in Parliament for Sarah to raise the issues she's campaigning on
  • have a good understanding of the issues that Sarah cares about, and the issues impacting Luton North
  • have experience of proactively and reactively dealing with local and national media
  • be highly confident running an office independently, show initiative and work well as part of a wider team, demonstrating a positive and flexible attitude
  • share the aims and values of the Labour and trade union movement

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

You must be available for an online interview on 8th or 9th December. If successful, you must then be available for a second in-person interview on 13th December.

For those invited to second interview, there will be a written task for submission by 9am on 13th December.
