Job Title: Intern, Payments Policy

Job Details

The role of the Payments Policy Intern will be to provide secretariat support and contribute to policy development across a number of policy initiatives, including:

• Digital Inclusion:
o Work to support the initiation of a Digital Inclusion Working group with members, and in collaboration with Personal Finance colleagues.
o Assist UK Finance resources in supporting WG meetings, undertaking desk research and review industry position papers, gaining valuable experience of working with industry stakeholders and regulators.
o Provide insight and develop expertise in the payment methods available to consumers and businesses within the UK, comprising both digital and non-digital methods.

• Standards:
o As identified by the Payments Futures report, the use of standards is a key enabler of interoperability and competition.
o UK Finance have established a cross-industry Standards Strategy Group to consider the opportunities for coordinating the development and governance of payments standards.
o The role holder will support UK Finance resources in the management of this group, helping to manage external consultancy support, developing expertise in the various standards supporting UK payments and building an awareness of technical changes required to support new and existing digital payment methods.

• Open Banking:
o Following the CMA’s order Retail Banking Market Investigation Order 2017, and its pending closure, UK Finance has continued work with members to assist the continued development of Open Banking to meet market needs.
o During this role, the successful applicant will gain an understanding of the technical requirements of Open Banking, understand the wider policy objectives of other Open Data proposals (such as BEIS’ Smart Data proposals and the FCA’s Open Finance initiative).

The role will involve work across multiple departments within UK Finance, including the Project Management Office and Personal Finance in order to support multiple discrete pieces of work. As the internship progresses, there will be opportunity to feed into the wider policy objectives as pursued by the Payments team, including policy work on the NPA and wider customer protection across payment channels.
