Job Details
Luke Pollard is looking for an enthusiastic, organised and highly motivated individual to lead his busy Westminster office.
Luke was elected as the Labour and Co-operative MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport in June 2017, becoming Plymouth’s first out LGBT+ MP. He is also Labour’s Shadow Armed Forces Minister, and the former Shadow Environment Secretary.
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role for a determined campaigning MP, working on gun law changes, environment, and defence policy to name a few.
Responsibilities include:
• Running the Westminster office as part of Luke’s Senior Team, line-managing staff
• Leading on press and comms, corresponding with journalists, pitching op eds, and organising broadcast media appearances
• Co-ordinating campaigns, devising strategies and horizon-scanning for new opportunities
• Undertaking policy research and development, producing both concise briefings at pace and doing longer term research projects
• Monitoring parliamentary business
• Writing speeches and briefing notes
• Overseeing and producing content for Luke’s social media channels, including drafting copy and some video editing and graphic design
• Liaising with Shadow Defence Team and stakeholders across Parliament attending meetings as appropriate
• Responding to routine correspondence and enquires
• Diary management, general admin as required
The successful applicant would have:
• 1 – 2 years experience working in Parliament, politics, journalism, comms, political research or another relevant role
• A deep knowledge of politics and Parliament
• A good understanding of what makes an interesting news story
• Line-management experience
• Highly developed organisational skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with outstanding attention to detail
• The ability to work often under pressure and to tight deadlines
• Ability to work independently, show initiative and work well as part of a wider team, demonstrating a positive and flexible attitude.
• Sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Labour Party and Co-operative Party
• Light graphic design and video editing skills are also desirable
