Job Details

Eddie Hughes MP is looking to appoint a full-time Caseworker to assist his team in the day-to-day running of his busy Constituency Office. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, keen to help the local community and will have an interest in politics.

Job Description

  • Handling correspondence from constituents, drafting responses and providing advice and support to constituents on a variety of issues (housing, immigration, health and social care, etc.) through liaison with national and local government agencies, as well as other relevant organisations.
  • Organising and attending constituency surgeries with the MP.
  • Monitoring constituency issues and providing briefings on complex cases and local issues.
  • Managing own caseload and progress of casework, ensuring all cases are logged, progress is monitored and all identified actions are taken.
  • Handling casework in a sensitive and confidential manner, ensuring all accurate records are kept in adherence to the principles of the Data Protection Act and GDPR.
  • Researching and drafting responses or responding to constituents on any issues raised on behalf of the Member.
  • Handling telephone and walk-in enquiries.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation/guidelines as appropriate in dealing with casework.
  • Attending meetings and constituency visits with the MP.

Desirable knowledge and experience: Previous experience working for a Member of Parliament/Local Government/Civil Service or a third sector organisation. Relevant experience of advising on subjects such as housing, welfare benefits or immigration issues or community advocacy/legal work would be beneficial. Knowledge of the Constituency and local demographics.

Person Specification

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence in interacting with people at all levels and in a variety of circumstances.
  • Able to prioritise a demanding workload to meet deadlines.
  • Able to deal with issues in a confidential manner.
  • Able to work effectively in a small team.
  • Competent use of IT including full proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience of a casework management system or similar database would be an advantage.
  • Experience of working and dealing with the general public.
  • Awareness and understanding of current political issues and how Parliament works.
  • Sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the Conservative Party.
