London South Bank University (LSBU) is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Policy and Public Affairs Manager to provide pivotal support to the work of the Corporate Affairs team engaging with local government, Parliament and Whitehall; making impactful contributions to higher education policy debates; and promoting LSBU and its views.

Details about the role

The Corporate Affairs team is part of the Strategy and Corporate Affairs Directorate. It works closely with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof David Phoenix, and has had a demonstrable impact in shaping Government higher education policy over the last five years.

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement, the Policy and Public Affairs Manager will provide crucial support in enabling LSBU to further extend its reach and influence through:

  • Monitoring and interpreting national, regional and local education and research policy, to ensure the University responds and adapts to changing government priorities
  • Engaging, and building productive relationships with, Parliamentarians, Ministers, officials within Whitehall and other stakeholders across the sector
  • Attempting to influence higher education policy with novel, timely and pragmatic contributions through consultation submissions, reports and opinion pieces
  • Ensuring that LSBU continues to be a leading voice on professional and technical education within the higher education sector.

About You

We are looking for someone with experience of working in public affairs, government relations, policy engagement or within Parliament or Government or similar roles within a political-facing environment. You will be:

  • Able quickly to grasp complex policy topics and understand how they will affect the organisation
  • An assured communicator able to write clearly and engagingly in a variety of styles to suit different audiences
  • A self-starter, able to identify opportunities for the university to further its public affairs and policy aims
  • Well organised, with an eye for detail, and the confidence to represent the university externally
  • Sympathetic to the university and wider LSBU Group’s mission
