The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the recognised trade body for the industry with distilling members represent around 95% of production. We have an overarching aim of ensuring Scotch Whisky continues to be the world's undisputed premier whisky and consumers' spirit of choice and our mission is to drive the best possible global business environment for Scotch.

Sustainability and associated regulatory drivers (both in the UK and abroad) are increasingly at the forefront of our members agenda. The industry is proud of the work to deliver environmental improvements across the sector including emission reductions. In response to the continued challenge and desire of our members to deliver further advances, we are seeking to grow our industry team to strengthen the support we provide to members, championing their voice and interests in this fast-moving regulatory & policy environment.

Reporting to the Head of Environment, the policy advisor will be involved in the research & analysis of existing and developing regulatory requirements relevant to the industry, particularly focusing on those impacting sustainability and excise & customs. The post holder will be responsible for providing associated writing briefings and reports, responding to official consultations and engaging with both internal and external stakeholders and our membership, to develop and communicate relevant policy positions.

To be considered for the role, you will need to bring:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a policy position or relevant equivalent.
  • A good working knowledge of one or more of the UK regulatory areas relevant to the industry. Those relating to environmental or tax-related compliance would be of a particular advantage
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, demonstrating the ability to understand and explain complex issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.

On a practical note, this is:

  • a permanent role
  • offering up to £36,000 - £40,000 pa depending on experience
  • based in either our London or Edinburgh office
  • within a hybrid working environment, 1 days a week minimum in the office or out at meetings
  • flexible working requests will be accommodated wherever possible
