Job Details

Wera Hobhouse is the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Bath, elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 12,322. She is the Lib Dem spokesperson on the Climate Emergency. She speaks for the Lib Dems in parliament on Justice, Women and Equalities and shadows the Leader of the House.


The appointment of Parliamentary Assistant will be based at Wera’s office in Portcullis House, Westminster.
You will be working closely with Wera in parliament, drafting speeches and questions, preparing briefings, providing administrative support for her parliamentary work, and overseeing Wera’s parliamentary diary.
The work is challenging and exciting. With parliament normally sitting Monday to Thursday, the job is at Portcullis House 9am-6pm Monday – Thursday, and 9am-1pm on Friday which can be from home.

Essential Skills
• Good writing skills for drafting speeches and briefings
• Strong administrative skills to plan ahead and to keep on top of the many things changing through the parliamentary day
• Ability to work proactively and independently as part of a small team

The job description detail includes:
• Assist in writing external communications including speeches for the MP
• Compilation of briefing packs for MPs, take notes of meetings and draft appropriate submissions
• Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc.
• Diary Management
• Engage confidentially, professionally, with care and integrity with members of the public, through telephone enquiries, social media, email and face to face
• Give advice on policy issues
• Have working knowledge of relevant legislation and upcoming business including how they impact on the constituency
• Help draft amendments for reports and prepare briefing material
• Prepare and present briefing notes for committees, press releases, parliamentary questions etc.
• There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work occasionally
• To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
• Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
