Job Details

Main responsibilities:

  • Ensure the smooth running of Mr Shapps’ Parliamentary office, including delegating and overseeing the work of colleagues and providing high quality and effective support to the MP for his Parliamentary and constituency work.
  • Horizon-scanning, anticipating what advice/action may be required, and proactively identifying and resolving problems.
  • Liaising with Mr Shapps’ Ministerial and Departmental teams, coordinating relevant work streams, and engaging regularly with a wide variety of stakeholders including other MP offices and external organisations to support his work.
  • Have final sign-off on relevant delegated areas, including casework, HR functions, IPSA budgets and office administration.
  • Plan Mr Shapps' diary and external stakeholder engagement, and provide strategic advice on constituency matters.
  • Collating information and keeping the Mr Shapps informed of relevant national, parliamentary and constituency developments.
  • Conducting research and performing other ad hoc and administrative tasks, including casework.
  • Deal with security matters, keep abreast of security guidance, maintain the security system, liaise with external bodies.

There may be a requirement to work outside of the normal working hours, including attending events with the MP.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Strong political antennae, judgement & feel for working effectively in the Westminster world
  • Highly organised manner with the ability to manage and prioritise a large and diverse workload
  • Exceptional written, oral & communication skills
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines calmly and while under pressure
  • Be at ease working with MPs and other senior figures
  • Personal initiative, commitment and a proactive work ethic
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • A supporter of traditional Conservative values and beliefs

The successful applicant will likely have a minimum of 2 years’ parliamentary or equivalent experience.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis and an appointment will be made before the closing date if the right candidate is found. Applicants are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The successful candidate would ideally start in early August, and no later than mid-August.
