Job Details

About us

The Local Government Association works to promote and improve local government, shaping national policy on behalf of councils. We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils, so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.

The role

In this role you will lead the LGA’s policy work related to vulnerable adults as part of the Community Wellbeing team. The role covers issues related to supported and older people’s housing, mental health, suicide prevention, learning disabilities and autism, dementia and the Armed Forces Covenant. The successful candidate will need to draw on expertise from across the LGA and local government as well as user groups and the voluntary and community sector to develop the LGA’s positions.

This is a very cross-cutting role working with all parts of the organisation, including with colleagues leading the LGA’s policy work on children’s mental health and on wider aspects of housing and planning, and alongside the Care and Health Improvement Programme. It also requires working with a wide range of external stakeholders including government departments and agencies and organisations representing adult social care and public health officers in councils.

The requirements

You will be comfortable working on:

  • Complex and challenging issues in a political environment, facilitating difficult conversations and establishing consensus.
  • An understanding of key government policies and the policy making / legislative process
  • Experience and credibility to build and maintain effective relationships
  • Experience and credibility to lead the conversation with government and with national organisations from across the public, private, and voluntary sectors.

You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

As a Disability Confident Leader, the LGA values diversity and encourages applications from all sections of the community

Closing Date: 21 July 2022

Interview/Start Dates

Interview Date: W/C Monday 1 August 2022, interviews will be held remotely
