Job Title: Campaigns and policy manager

Working For: Royal Statistical Society

Location: London

Salary: £38,000-£42,000 depending on experience

Length of Contract: Permanent

Job Details

The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is a membership organisation dedicated to promoting the understanding and use of statistics for the public good.

We are looking to hire a policy and public affairs officer to work in our small, dynamic communications and policy team. Initially the main focus of the role will be driving a new project focusing on “good enough” statistics. This work is funded by FTX Future Fund and is prompted by some challenges that have emerged during the pandemic: there is a systematic tendency within government to require that statistics and data used for decision-making are near perfect before either presenting them to decision-makers or the public. The post-holder will focus on specific areas of government statistics and communicate with government statisticians, politicians and the wider public to encourage the use of good enough statistics and improve understanding and communication of the uncertainty that is involved.

The post holder will also work to support and develop the other campaign priorities of the Society, on subjects including: the cost of living; education and statistical literacy; equality, diversity and inclusion; climate change and the environment; and Covid-19. This will involve a mixture of conventional policy work, supporting the Society’s groups and committees, convening stakeholders and organising events and potentially quantitative analysis of important policy issues. The role will involve working alongside the Society’s fellows, who are often world experts in the fields of statistics and data.

The ideal candidate will have around five years’ or more experience in public policy or politics roles, and a demonstrable interest in at least one of: statistics and data; science and innovation policy; promoting mathematical or scientific literacy; evidence-based policy making.
