The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has an exciting opportunity to join a professional policy team as policy adviser focusing on climate, water, air and soils, related to agriculture and land use. With climate change firmly at the top of the government agenda, there is an increasing focus in the CLA, and among our 27,000 members, on how agriculture and land use will change as part of a net-zero future and adapting to a changing climate and the need for greater environmental responsibility.
You will be at the forefront of influencing government policy and advising members on actions and opportunities in these important areas. This will include issues such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, climate change adaptation, water resource management including abstraction and storage, addressing ammonia emissions, and soil management. You might also get involved in work on renewable energy on land.
This is a varied and stimulating role that will suit someone with an in depth knowledge of at least one of these areas and a willingness to learn. You will be expected to represent the CLA at government and industry meetings, build a network of key contacts, conduct research and analysis to shape policy and respond to consultations, and provide advice ot members in a range of formats. There are plenty opportunities for learning and development to build knowledge and skills.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
• Knowledge of key issues related to climate policy, and water, air and soils policy as they affect agriculture and land use in the UK.
• Understanding of evidence-based policy development and excellent analytical skills.
• Ability to make a compelling case verbally and in writing.
• Ability to build network of key contacts.
• An understanding of the key issues affecting rural land managers and businesses.
