Job Title: Community and Public Energy Campaigner

Working For: Platform

Location: North-East

Salary: £38,981

Length of Contract: Permanent

Job Details

Communities along the North-East coast of Scotland and England have been at the forefront of oil and gas extraction for the last fifty years. Their livelihoods, landscapes, culture and economies have been shaped by crude oil. They have a deep, lived understanding of being at the frontline of fossil fuel extraction and yet these communities are being almost completely excluded from climate conversations.
This project seeks to envision, popularise and campaign to bring about a democratic, just, and sustainable energy system for communities currently reliant on the oil and gas industry. The UK’s offshore North-Sea wind capacity is rapidly being developed and yet the big climate players are staying silent on the issue of ownership. If we are to avoid the mistakes of the past we must organise now for different models of ownership and control. Platform’s Community and Public Energy Campaigner will work with communities across the North East to change this reality, situating the project within Platform’s broader five year strategy.
About the role
You will be responsible for project managing the Community and Public Energy strand of North Sea Just Transition work. You will bring together people across the North-East coast of Scotland and England and work with a community organiser to develop a participatory process that envisions and builds support for a just energy future for the North East. You will support the community organiser in ensuring the community workshops deliver the strategic aims of the project.
You will lead the council advocacy strand of the work convincing council staff and elected representatives in the North-East to support a democratic energy transition. Being based in the North-East will be a significant advantage but the role would also work if you were able to travel there regularly. We encourage applications from people based in the North East of England and Scotland.
