Job Details

Grant Shapps is seeking to appoint a proactive and hardworking Parliamentary Assistant to join his busy Westminster team. The position would suit a highly motivated individual who can act on their own initiative.

Great interpersonal skills, adaptability and commitment are essential. MS Excel or Google Sheets experience essential. You don’t have to be a spreadsheet genius, but you do need to be competent.

Responsibilities include:
• Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure the MP is accurately informed on key issues
• Develop and maintain an understanding of the main issues of interest within Parliament
• Monitor local, regional and national media coverage, including social media in order to track and brief the MP on relevant issues
• Project work/management to help drive forward projects every day
• Maintain positive on-going relationships with all parties, especially Members of Parliament
• There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work occasionally

Requirements:
• Outstanding political awareness and judgement
• Previous Parliamentary experience/knowledge
• The ability to manage your own workload and work to tight deadlines
• Highly motivated to deliver on specific projects
• Strong ability to organise your time and that of the MP
• Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Conservative and Unionist Party

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Grant wants to expand the membership of an APPG he chairs (make one up here). Describe how you would go about ascertaining both the private and public thoughts of MPs to this issue. A spreadsheet would be helpful in organising any data collated, so it would be advised to include an example of this.

Then provide an example of correspondence you may send to an individual to persuade them to join.
