Job Details

The Rt Hon Theresa May MP is looking for an experienced parliamentary assistant to provide hands-on support as part of her House of Commons team for four days a week and her private office for one day a week.


Main responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
(four days)

  • Responding to routine policy and casework enquires.
  • Preparing briefing notes ahead of meetings, constituency engagements and parliamentary activities.
  • Undertaking desk research on a wide range of local and national issues to support Theresa’s parliamentary work.
  • Handling complex casework and supporting Theresa’s constituency surgery.
  • Writing press releases for local newspapers and monitoring constituency media coverage.
  • Engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders to support Theresa’s work as a constituency MP.

(one day)

  • Assisting the Chief of Staff with a range of administrative tasks to support the work of The Office of Theresa May, including handling correspondence from members of the public.

Capabilities required:

  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Highly organised, able to prioritise and manage a heavy workload
  • An excellent knowledge of British politics and current affairs
  • Personal initiative and a proactive work ethic
  • Personable and able to work as part of a small team
  • An ability to maintain complete discretion and confidentiality

Please note, this role entails two contracts with separate employers (The Rt Hon Theresa May MP and The Office of Theresa May). By submitting your application, you give consent for your data to be shared between the two entities.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
