Job Details
The successful candidate will be involved in advising the House of Lords Labour Leadership, Front Bench and Backbenchers. The role includes drafting amendments, briefing and speaking notes for the House of Lords stages of legislation, managing bills for the Opposition as they progress through the House of Lords and doing research for the House of Lords Leadership.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Providing research and briefings for legislation, debates and Parliamentary Questions
- Prepare detailed legislative amendments for the House of Lords stages of Government legislation
- Managing Bills for the Opposition as they progress through the House of Lords
- Shadowing the work of Government departments as part of wider Shadow teams
- Work as a key part of a small team around the Opposition Leadership in the House of Lords
- Maintain, update and develop knowledge of relevant legislation
- Monitor legislation, debates, motions principally in the House of Lords but as relevant in House of Commons
- Carry out research on identified legislation and issues
- Analyse and evaluate research and interpret data
- Prepare and produce detailed and specific amendments to legislation
- Prepare and produce speaking notes for Shadow spokespersons
- Prepare, and present results both orally and in writing, for parliamentary questions, briefing notes, meetings with politicians and stakeholders
- Contribute to the HOL Leadership communications strategy by providing policy support to our Media Adviser
- Advise and guide the Leadership, frontbench and as appropriate Members of the House on policy issues
- Liaise with local and national bodies, government agencies, lobby groups, trade unions
- Develop knowledge in specialist areas as required by the Leadership
- Work closely with Shadow Ministerial teams in both Houses
Key Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Parliament and the British political system, including party politics and the UK media
- Experience of working in a party political environment
- Knowledge of the legislative process
- Work confidently and co-operatively in a fast-moving, multi-tasking environment
- Communicate effectively with both internal and external contacts
- High level written and oral communication, and inter-personal skills
- Excellent organisation
- Competent use of IT
