Job Details

This is a key leadership role, putting the successful applicant at the heart of developments in Scottish politics. Working alongside SNP MSPs & leading a press and research office. The position involves providing press and policy support for MSPs and working closely with the media. Applicants must have a strong media and political background, a firm knowledge of Scottish Government and SNP policy and a clear understanding of how the Scottish Parliament operates. A strong record in planning, strategy and management skills is required.
Duties & responsibilities
•Manage & effectively coordinate a team of communications officers & research staff to provide press and policy support for SNP MSPs
•Handling significant media issues, including clearing comments from key spokespeople
•Drafting, editing and proof-reading press releases, comment pieces, statements, quotes and other materials for print, broadcast or online audiences
•Providing support and guidance to MSPs in drafting written questions, motions and amendments.
•Generating proactive coverage for the SNP MSP group
•Handling media bids and ensuring MSPs are briefed beforehand
•Working with senior staff to advise on and oversee the development of media and communications plans and strategies. Building on the achievements and success of the SNP in recent years
•Advising, guiding & supporting research team to inform and support MSPs in constituency & parliamentary work
Person specification
•A strong record of adaptability and flexibility, including a willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary
•A proven record in, and enthusiasm for, successful communications and organisational management
•Excellent people skills and ability to build strong professional relationships and motivate teams
•Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
•Full awareness and understanding of the SNP’s vision and values
•Full knowledge and understanding of Scottish Government policy
•Knowledge of the work of the SNP at Westminster and local government level
•Established media contacts & credibility with journalists, broadcasters and other stakeholders
•Ability to apply, critical thinking to respond to fast-moving political situations
•Experience using social media to engage and build audiences
