The IES is a professional body with its membership representing the full spectrum of environmental sciences, spanning fields as diverse as air quality, land condition and marine and coastal science – wherever you find environmental work underpinned by science.

We aim to unite science and people to resolve environmental challenges and to create and sustain a knowledgeable, skilled, diverse, and trusted environmental profession engaged in the transformation to a sustainable society.

The IES is recruiting a Policy Officer to join our Policy Team and support the development and delivery of policy for the IES and its Environmental Policy Implementation Community (EPIC).

Job Role

  1. Contribute to strategic work plans for IES policy activity, particularly on issues related to the delivery and implementation of policy.
  2. Work with EPIC, local authority members of the IES, and other relevant stakeholders to inform the IES’s wider policy activity.
  3. Ensure that policy statements produced by EPIC are consistent and in line with the vision and strategy of the IES.
  4. Undertake research and analysis on policy and its implications on the environment, particularly on issues related to the delivery and implementation of policy.
  5. Assist in the authoring of policy reports and the delivery of policy training and guidance.
  6. Seek to raise the profile of the IES with policy stakeholders, particularly the Devolved Administrations, Local Government, and other organisations involved in the implementation and delivery of policy.
  7. Help maintain our contacts within Parliament, government departments, arms-length bodies and local authorities.
  8. Monitor consultation topics and deadlines from relevant departments and organisations to ensure that the IES is responding to critical topics.
  9. Identify strategic opportunities to broaden our policy work, methods of engagement with policy decision makers and to challenge thinking within the organisation.
  10. As appropriate produce articles, analysis and other contributions on policy for the IES communication channels.
  11. Support the Policy Lead in ad hoc tasks, as required.
