Job Details

Emily Thornberry MP is looking for a Parliamentary Assistant to join her Westminster office, with particular responsibility for managing her diary. This is a demanding yet rewarding role supporting Emily in her roles as a busy constituency MP, active Labour campaigner, and as Shadow Attorney General.

Previous experience of working in Parliament is desirable. The successful candidate will be highly organised, adept at working in a fast-paced environment and able to work independently and proactively to ensure Emily can deliver her important responsibilities effectively. Knowledge of Islington South and Finsbury is desirable.

Duties:

• Manage Emily’s diary, with responsibility for managing scheduling, organising meetings, and keeping the diary up to date in Outlook.
• Ensure Emily is aware of and prepared for her day-to-day schedule, by preparing effective briefings and providing regular in-person diary updates.
• Attend events and meetings with Emily, as required.
• Liaise with a broad range of constituency and parliamentary stakeholders, both on the phone and in person.
• Proactively lead on individual projects and activities with minimal supervision.
• Organise travel and accompany Emily to events, including on occasion outside of London.
• Support other members of the parliamentary team in day-to-day office administration.
• Undertake other duties as required.

The role will involve some working outside of normal working hours and some national travel.

Skills, experience, and qualities:

• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, including experience of effective diary management.
• Superb written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of the legislative and political system of the UK, as well as an understanding of party politics.
• Ability to deal with constituents and other stakeholders in a compassionate, understanding, and sensitive manner.
• Ability to prioritise tasks effectively, and to work well and keep calm under pressure and to tight deadlines.
• Strong team-player, who is able to work well with others and independently with minimal supervision.
• Politically sensitive and able to work with tact and discretion.
• Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
