Job Details
Lewis Atkinson, MP for Sunderland Central, is seeking a Senior Parliamentary Assistant to support his Parliamentary work.
This is a senior role within Lewis’ team, the only one that is based in London. Lewis is therefore looking for an individual with significant experience of working in Parliament, who is able to operate with minimum supervision, organising their own work and proactively working to maximise Lewis' effectiveness in Westminster.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong political awareness, networks and knowledge of parliamentary procedures. Excellent writing and communication skills are also required.
Lewis is particularly focused on issues relating to health, policing/criminal justice and culture. He is determined to deliver for Sunderland and the wider North East of England.
As such, while this is a London-based role, there is an expectation that the postholder will occassionally travel to Sunderland and actively build and maintain relationships and understanding with constituency-based staff.
Key responsibilities:
• Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure the Member is accurately informed on key issues;
• To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House and Parliamentary procedure;
• To produce and present high quality written reports, draft questions, briefing notes, advice;
• Undertake research on subjects as directed and seek and use research carried out by others, for example the House of Commons Library or external groups;
• To lead on the prioritisation and management of the MP’s Westminster diary, using expertise to advise how to best use time to maximise the MP’s effectiveness;
• Deal with complex queries and complaints on the MP’s behalf, including drafting and signing letters;
• Horizon-scanning, anticipate what advice or action may be required; proactively identify problems and resolve them;
• Maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, including impact on the constituency;
• Manage and progress complex cases;
• Research and monitor local, regional and national issues and media;
• Respond to correspondence and enquiries from a range of sources;
• Lead on project work as required;
• Undertake supervisory responsibility for any Westminster-based interns or junior staff.
