Job Details
The Leader and Chief Whip of the Opposition in the House of Lords are looking for a researcher to join an existing team that supports them and their wider frontbench in scrutinising the Government's business and legislative programme. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a supportive and dedicated team working at the heart of Westminster, effecting real change through the legislative process.
Responsibilities:
Including but not limited to -
- Conducting research and producing briefings on legislative matters, policy issues and current affairs.
- Drafting questions, speeches and amendments to legislation in consultation with our frontbench.
- Assisting the wider team with other duties that may be specified from time to time by the Leader or Chief Whip of the Opposition, their Chief of Staff or Deputy Chief of Staff.
Skills/Experience:
We are looking for someone with a strong work ethic who take pride in carrying out their work honestly, reliably and diligently to the best of their ability. Applicants should have the following skills and attributes -
- Legal, Parliamentary and Policy Knowledge: familiarity with, and interest in, legislation, parliament, policy, current affairs and the political landscape.
- Research Skills: ability to analyse and summarise complex information from various sources in to clear and concise written briefings.
- Writing Skills: ability to write accurate and coherent briefings and speeches on a range of topics, often to tight deadlines.
- Confidentiality: the upmost integrity, trustworthiness and discretion.
- Adaptability: willingness to handle unexpected changes or urgent request and work flexibly as part of a wider team.
The successsful applicant is likley to cover an MHCLG and DHSC desks. Knowledge or expereince in these areas is prefered but not essential.
Other Information:
Candidates should be sympathetic to aims of the Conservative Party. To fulfil this role you will be required to apply for security clearance, which is undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office in the Houses of Parliament.
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates
Initial interviews will start the week commencing Monday 14th September. A further and final interview for shortlisted applicants will be arranged after that. The successful applicant will be asked to start as soon as possible after the Conference Recess, from Monday 12th October onwards.
