Salary: IPSA Pay scale £36,175 - £56,996 (dependent on experience)

Job Details

Afzal Khan is seeking a proactive and politically engaged Senior Parliamentary Assistant to support his work in Parliament.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and enthusiastic, with excellent writing skills and able to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle policy and campaign queries on behalf of the MP
  • Draft speeches, parliamentary contributions, letters, and briefings on behalf of the MP
  • Provide policy advice and ensure the MP is briefed on Parliamentary business
  • Research local, regional, or national issues to support the MP’s work and write briefings accordingly
  • Liaise with stakeholders, interest groups, and external bodies
  • Supervise a junior member of staff
  • Attend, organise, or support meetings and events, occasionally outside normal working hours
  • Ensure data protection compliance and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Undertake other responsibilities in relation to the MP’s parliamentary duties
  • Horizon-scanning, anticipate what advice or action may be required; proactively identify problems and resolve them.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to work collaboratively or independently when required
  • Ability to handle a large and complex workload
  • Knowledge of UK parliamentary procedures and tools
  • Good local/regional/national political knowledge, understanding and judgement
  • Experience of social media is desirable
  • Experience of working in Parliament is desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital tools
  • Personable, with a can-do and proactive attitude
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour party
