Job Details

The office of Alistair Carmichael is recruiting for a fixed-term paid internship, based in London but with some opportunity/expectation (delete as appropriate) for work travel to the Northern Isles. The successful candidate will work across across a variety of tasks and a range of policy issues affecting Orkney and Shetland and in conjunction with the MP's priorities, including connected to his role as Chair of the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. Closing date for applications Friday 18th September, but candidates will be assessed on an ongoing basis. The role is envisaged as full time, but part time candidates will be considered.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with arrangements for events; this may include: venue research and bookings; compiling and managing guest-lists; liaising with suppliers; and providing on-the-day event support as required
  • Assisting on projects
  • Assisting with diary management
  • Assisting/learning how to manage casework
  • Assisting/learning how to monitor media coverage and brief MP
  • Attending surgeries and other meetings as part of training
  • Basic administrative support
  • Learning/assisting in appropriate research
  • Learning/assisting in drafting responses to constituents
  • Open, handle and action email, post and social media enquiries

Additional responsibilities:

  • Learning and supporting in parliamentary business

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
