Job Details
Uma Kumaran MP is seeking a highly motivated, politically engaged experienced individual to be her Parliamentary Assistant to support her work in Westminster and Stratford & Bow
Key responsibilities:
• Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure the MP is accurately informed on key issues
• Assist in writing external communications including speeches for the MP
• Assist with casework as required, exposure and management of complex cases
• Compilation of briefing packs for MPs, take notes of meetings and draft appropriate submissions
• Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business. This would include issues of importance both nationally and in the local constituency
• Engage confidentially, professionally, with care and integrity with members of the public
• Maintain positive on-going relationships with all parties including members of the public, groups, suppliers, and Westminster where required
• Monitor local, regional, and national media coverage and brief the MP on relevant issues
• Monitor social media activity and report any relevant trends to the Office Manager/MP
• Project work and management, providing generalist admin support
• Work with colleagues in communications/casework to identify potential impacts from the research work and disseminate them effectively
• There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work occasionally
Skills and experience:
• Desirable – previous experience working in, or adjacent to, Parliament
• Excellent organisational skills, with proven experience of managing competing priorities
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong understanding of Parliament and the legislative process
• Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and present complex information clearly
• Ability to anticipate needs, take initiative and resolve issues before they escalate
• A compassionate person with a strong sense of justice, a natural ability to empathise with others, and a determination to fight for fair outcomes
• Ability to adapt and work effectively as part of a small team
• Being a self-starter with a demonstrable record of taking initiative
• Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour Party
