In order to support preparations for government, the Shadow Treasury Team are looking for a financial and economic analyst. The successful candidate will report jointly to the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Essential skills and qualifications
• Strong blend of financial understanding, research skills, quantitative techniques, attention to detail and focus on accuracy. Able to identify insights from the work.
• Ability to specify and build financial models. Including strong analysis of the current fiscal and economic situation and examination of the impact of policy choices.
• Accuracy and rigour. Capable of creating analyses and financial models that give the required certainty, have an appropriate level of detail and are created in a tight timeframe.
• Proficiency with the appropriate analysis and modelling software including some familiarity with manipulating data sets in Python (e.g. Pandas) or similar (e.g. R/Stata).
• Appropriate use of AI techniques, models and software.
• High integrity and an understanding of the need for strict confidentiality at all times.
Your experience
• A track record of financial modelling.
• Demonstrated logical and critical thinking to resolve complex issues.
• Likely to have at least 12 months’ experience in a professional or academic work environment.
• You have demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team as well as conducting self-directed research and analysis.
• Available to commence work quickly.
What you will do
• Analyse the Government’s plans as set out in the Treasury ‘Red Book’ and in the OBR’s Economic and Fiscal Outlook and other official statements and disclosures.
• Build an internal, dynamic Economic and Fiscal Outlook to quantify official opposition plans and timelines for government against the constantly shifting macroeconomic challenges Britain faces.
• Work with the opposition policy team to ensure that proposals for tax and spend are fully costed, modelled, and supported by evidence.
• Use Parliament’s accountability mechanisms to reveal additional information about the public finances by extracting data through written questions and FOIs.
