Job Details
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the day-to-day communications of a busy MP's office. You will tell the story of Claire's work in Parliament and across Thornbury and Yate and work closely with the constituency and Westminster teams to keep messaging consistent as part of a joined-up approach to getting Claire's campaigns across.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver, with the Parliamentary Assistant, a flexible communications strategy across social media, website, newsletters and traditional media
- Create engaging content, including graphics, photos, short form video and long form posts; moderating content on social media.
- Draft press releases, newspaper columns and the regular constituency newsletter
- Handle media enquiries; build relationships with local/regional media, pitching to journalists and setting up interviews around campaigns
- Brief and prepare the MP for interviews and media appearances
- Monitor local issues, media coverage, social media trends and online engagement
- Attend visits, meetings and events to gather content, take notes and follow up
- Maintain the contact book, handling personal data in line with GDPR
- Efficient record keeping of MP communications database
- Occasional evening/weekend work, and travel to Westminster, will be required.
Person specification
Essential
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to adapt style across formats and audiences
- Experience creating content for social media/digital channels
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail; the ability to manage competing priorities, often at short notice
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team
- A strong interest in, and awareness of, local and national politics
- Confidence representing the MP in a media and public facing capacity
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle - this is a large rural constituency
- Sympathy with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats
Desirable
- Experience in communications, public affairs, journalism, marketing or politics, with an understanding of how the media operates
- Experience working with local or regional media
- Experience with design and editing tools such as Canva, Kapwing, CapCut or Adobe Creative Suite, and website platforms
- Knowledge of social media scheduling and email marketing platforms
