Tech Against Terrorism is an initiative launched and supported by the UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (UN CTED). We support the global tech sector in tackling terrorist use of the internet whilst respecting human rights.
About the role(s)
In this role you will research a wide variety of topics such as technology, tech policy, terrorism, human rights, digital rights, and international law. You will be key to supporting project delivery, mentorship of tech companies, and day-to-day running of the organisation. The role is suited for degree educated students from programmes such as Security, Counter Terrorism, Area Studies or Politics – or with relevant work experience on issues related to technology, tech policy and human rights.
Main Responsibilities
● Lead and conduct research projects on terrorist use of the internet
● Build and sustain relationships with smaller tech platforms and other stakeholders
● Attend and present on Tech Against Terrorism’s work at events
● Lead and support with ad hoc projects as needed
● Draft proposals and briefs
● Draft copy for blog posts: press releases, analysis, and reaction pieces
● Plan and lead meetings with internal team and external stakeholders
● Conduct assessments of tech companies’ internal policies and practices
Essential skills & experience
● Natural leader, takes initiative for areas where the organisation could develop/relationships could be built
● Adaptable and enjoyment of fast paced environments with often evolving workstreams
● Team player, willing to support other team members where needed and able to collaborate well
● Good people skills for external stakeholder engagement, including sensitivity when dealing with “political” nature of relationships and topics
● Strong organisational skills
● Excellent level in writing and editing skills
● Excellent knowledge of terrorism/violent extremism
● Good level of knowledge about tech policy and conceptual understanding of technological subject matter
● A bachelor’s degree in relevant subject area
Desirable skills
● Understanding of the policy debate around terrorist use of the internet and digital rights
● Some knowledge of programming languages (e.g. OSINT, python, data analytics tools) is an advantage
● Ability to conduct research in a foreign language (Arabic/Russian preferred)
● Examples of public speaking

These are two full-time positions with a start date in early May. If successful, we will invite you to a short phone interview. Should you progress we will invite you to a final round interview (in late March / early April). We reserve the right to hire before the application deadline.
