Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield and Shadow Further Education & Skills Minister is looking for a committed and hard-working Parliamentary intern to support him in his Parliamentary duties.
The candidate is required to have knowledge of the political environment and share an interest in Toby’s wider political interests. The primary purpose of this role will be to manage the high volume of policy casework which comes into Toby’s inbox.
As a fixed-term position, this role is suited for those considering politics as a career path.
Good political awareness is essential, as is a decent overall understanding of current political issues. The successful applicant must be able to work independently, have comprehensive research skills and be a fast learner. As you will be drafting letters on behalf of the MP, the ability to produce high-quality written work is essential, as is excellent attention to detail. Sympathy with the aims and principles of the Labour Party are essential.
The post is full time until the end of July 2023.
Responsibilities will include:
Taking ownership of the policy casework
Accompanying Toby to events in Parliament
Monitoring local and national issues
Supporting general office administration
Press releases and updates for Toby’s website
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
