Job Details

Nigel Mills MP is looking to recruit a Parliamentary Assistant for his Westminster Office.

This involves office, diary and communications management, political research and assisting with policy casework.

The applicant will be required to work in Westminster with occasional travel to the constituency. Some home working may be available on non-sitting days.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Draft and submit Parliamentary Questions.
  • Respond to routine correspondence and enquiries on policy issues.
  • Co-ordinate Nigel's Westminster diary and liaise with external partners.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as appropriate.
  • Organise and attend events in parliament, including liaising with Events and Catering teams.
  • Overseeing Parliamentary business and ensuring Member is briefed for significant debates and meetings, including for Select Committee meetings for Work & Pensions and International Development.
  • Ensuring joint working between staff in the constituency office and Westminster.
  • Support and co-ordinate APPGs chaired by the member.
  • Engage professionally, confidentially and with care and integrity with members of the public, through a variety of methods.

Person specification:

Essential skills:

  • Highly literate.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable, enthusiastic, and professional.
  • Awareness of current political issues.
  • Knowledge of Parliamentary process and workings of Government.
  • Ability to take initiative and be proactive in supporting Member’s parliamentary activities.

Desirable skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and confident in communicating with a variety of individuals in the political space.
  • Previous experience of working in a caseworker, parliamentary assistant, or other political role.
  • Detailed knowledge of Parliamentary process and workings of Government.
  • Experience of using case-management systems.
  • Local knowledge of Derbyshire/Amber Valley.
  • Sympathetic towards the aims and views of the Conservative Party.
