Job Title: Policy Advisor and Researcher (UK/EU)

Working For: Hong Kong Watch

Location: London

Salary: £35-38,000 pro rata (to be determined according to experience)

Length of Contract: One year renewable contract

Job Details

Hong Kong Watch is a UK-based registered charity which researches and monitors threats to Hong Kong’s human rights, rule of law and autonomy as promised under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle which is enshrined in the Basic Law and the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

We are a small NGO with a significant and substantial record of policy impact, disproportionate to our size, including the successful introduction of the British National Overseas Visa and its extension for those born after 1997, the introduction of lifeboat schemes in Canada and Australia, the US Hong Kong Autonomy Act, the suspension of extradition treaties, and policy successes on the question of Western pension funds divesting from Chinese stocks linked to forced labour.

Hong Kong Watch is seeking a Policy Advisor to help support our advocacy work in the UK Parliament, Whitehall government departments, European Parliament, EU Institutions, and with the civil society and NGO community.

The Policy Advisor will be expected to develop and publish original research looking at the human rights situation in Hong Kong, developments related to the British National Overseas (BNO) visa scheme for Hong Kongers in the UK, and other China related policies that are connected to Hong Kong.

The role will include conducting research projects, developing and maintaining strong relationships with European foreign offices and embassies, the UK Home Office and Department for Levelling Up, media, civil society, activists and local experts, conducting high-level briefings, drafting materials for press articles, publications and social media, and producing policy content for briefings, speeches and articles.

You will work with the Director of Policy to develop UK advocacy campaigns and lead the organisation’s work in the EU institutions and member states, including Germany.

You will also take part in organising events, attending virtual meetings or travel to meet with parliamentarians and stakeholders in the UK, EU, and European countries.
