The role of Head of News and Media is an intrinsic role within the organisation's Communications and Engagement Team, leading the coordination of media activities across Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and for the Mayor of Greater Manchester and Deputy Mayor.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience of leading a busy press office, can work independently, be highly motivated, have strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and can work to tight deadlines.

You will have experience of managing staff, provide leadership and role model behaviours.

The role also requires someone with strong influencing skills who can navigate complex political and organisational landscapes.

You should have a desire to protect and enhance the public image and reputation of Greater Manchester, and flourish in a fast-paced local government environment.

About you:

We are looking for someone who has experience of successfully developing and delivering media strategies for a large complex organisation, is skilled in managing pressurised and crisis communications situations and has excellent contacts across the UK media landscape.

The successful applicant will be a self-starter with extensive experience of generating ideas and pursuing them to result in successful communications initiatives. They will also have experience of managing and motivating a team to deliver high performance and their learning and development.
We need someone who has an eye for creating compelling stories and knows their way round new and emerging media.

Someone who has a track record of working with and providing strategic media counsel to politicians and senior leaders would be suited to this role as well as an understanding of local government and the UK political landscape as a whole.
