Working For: Institute for Government

Location: London

Salary: £50,000-£60,000 for Associate Director, £60,000+ for Programme Director

Length of Contract: Permanent

Job Details

We are looking for a senior team member to lead our work on improving policy-making in the UK. Depending on your experience this could either be at Programme Director level, shaping and leading this work as a member of the Institute’s Senior Management Team, or at Associate Director level, shaping and leading many aspects of the programme of work while reporting to a Programme Director.

Our work on policy-making looks at how government makes policy and develops ways to do it more effectively. We analyse every stage of the policy making process, from how evidence is used and how policies are conceived and developed, to how they are delivered and evaluated. We explore how civil servants provide advice and use evidence, the skills and expertise of policy teams, the way ministers and officials interact, and the role of citizens and public engagement.

In this role, you will:

  • Design a programme of research and other activities to identify and investigate the most pressing and important challenges and opportunities in policy-making today, and to develop compelling and creative proposals to address these.
  • Deliver this research programme, leading and managing a small team to conduct rigorous qualitative and quantitative research and analysis.
  • Produce compelling written research outputs, including recommendations, for a range of audiences, in formats ranging from longform reports to shorter comment pieces and articles for the press.
  • Be an authoritative spokesperson for the IfG with our key audiences, in the media and elsewhere on your areas of expertise, championing better policy-making and pursuing impact for our work.
  • Maintain a wide and varied network across government and other sectors, including very senior stakeholders.
  • Build partnerships with external organisations to support our work and further our impact, including working with our partnerships team to help secure funding for elements of our work.
  • Make a strong wider contribution to the IfG through leading defined corporate activities and inputting to overall research strategy.
