Job Title: Campaign Coordinator

Working For: Stop Botley West

Location: London

Salary: Freelance at rate of up to £700 per week

Length of Contract: 6 months in the first instance

Job Details

Our campaign wants to establish a Parliamentary liaison to examine/influence the relative contributions of different renewable energy sources to the UK energy mix. Each type of renewable energy has its drawbacks; there are some situations where renewables are not appropriate. Our aim is to facilitate an informed debate among MPs affected by large area solar installations which are being imposed on communities that have little or no say in the outcome of the planning process.

We seek a day-to-day MP-linked liaison coordinator in Parliament to help as follows:

  1. To facilitate/assist key MPs to hold a drop-in event in Portcullis House, featuring a number of solar campaign groups, to which all interested MPs etc. will be invited;
  2. To act as a liaison to encourage MPs to establish a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) broadening the discussion about UK renewables from one which is just about quantity to one where more consideration is given to alternative uses of the land on which renewables are built;
  3. To encourage key MPs to call for a full House of Commons debate on renewables with a view to implementing the recommendations of the new APPG.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in Parliament and interacting daily with MPs and their Special Advisors (SPADs), making sure an agreed plan of action comes to fruition. This position requires a self-starter individual with strong inter-personal skills, a good sense of humour, energy, and meticulous attention to detail.

All three activities listed above must be initiated by MPs.  It will be the coordinator’s job to follow up our approach to interested MPs, and to work closely with them and their SPADs who will be responsible for booking rooms in Portcullis House, issuing invitations to other MPs, lining up media coverage, all in a timely manner.

Limited orientation will be available from our existing Parliamentary contacts. The coordinator will work mostly on her/his own, in continuous contact with our campaign group based in Oxford.

The sponsoring MP will be responsible for arranging a Parliamentary pass and the successful candidate may be based in that MP’s office. Candidates must give full disclosure of any reason which might prevent a pass being issued as part of standard Parliamentary Security Vetting.

Employment is on a freelance basis, for a 35-hour week.

Closing Date: 8 January 2024

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews will take place in London during the third week of January 2024 with a view to the work starting as soon as possible thereafter. We will respond to all applications and will interview all suitable candidates.
