Job Details

Wes Streeting is looking for a Press Officer to support his work as a Member of Parliament and Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

The successful candidate will have experience as a Press Officer or journalist, experience of writing press releases, articles, blogs and briefs, and a thorough understanding of devising and implementing a media strategy. They will also have knowledge and understanding of the aims and structure of The Labour Party and the ability to organise press conferences and photo opportunities

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Contributing ideas towards media strategies
  2. Work with journalists and broadcast outlets to secure coverage of Labour party policies, stories and campaigns
  3. Briefing journalists
  4. Securing media coverage for press conferences, visits and events
  5. Setting up interviews and photo opportunities
  6. Writing press releases and other copy including articles as required
  7. Working with communications teams across the organisation
  8. Taking part in weekend and out of hours media duty
  9. Undertaking any other reasonable tasks as required.

Experience

  • Experience of delivering a media strategy.
  • Experience as a Press Officer or journalist.
  • Experience working with broadcasters
  • Experience of organising and running press conferences, media opportunities and photo opportunities.
  • Experience of briefing journalists and acting as a spokesperson.
  • Experience of writing press releases, articles, blogs and briefs.

Knowledge

  • A thorough understanding of devising and implementing a media strategy
  • Extensive knowledge of national and regional media - including broadcast and online outlets.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the aims and structure of The Labour Party.

Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to be creative, identify good stories and gain coverage in print, broadcast and online media.
  • Ability to co-ordinate a wide range of requests for quotes and interviews.
  • Ability to organise press conferences and photo opportunities.
  • Ability to provide briefings for journalists.
  • Excellent writing and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to work closely with politicians and staff from other teams.

Interviews will take place in the first week of April 2024.  We would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.
