Alistair Strathern MP is looking for a motivated, organised and compassionate Caseworker to join his dynamic team in Mid Bedfordshire.

Alistair won the historic Mid Bedfordshire by-election last October, and since then he has hit the ground running: holding open surgeries, town hall events and crime and anti-social behaviour workshops across Bedfordshire.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in helping Alistair make a difference to the lives of constituents across Mid Bedfordshire, and take the lead in helping to resolve constituents challenges and take up campaigns on their behalf.

This is a part time role working a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 days a week. Shift patterns can be agreed with the successful applicant.

The role is based in Alistair’s constituency office at the Rufus Centre, Flitwick, Bedfordshire, with the option for some home-working.

Duties will include:

  • Dealing with correspondence, telephone enquiries and emails and providing timely responses.
  • Organising and attending surgeries, other relevant meetings, and taking notes.
  • Gathering information relevant to assist cases.
  • Liaising with various agencies and organisations to resolve constituents' problems.
  • Identifying and responding to local casework trends across the area.
  • Assisting Alistair to develop responses to key local issues.
  • Logging all cases, monitoring progress and ensuring that actions are taken.
  • Retaining records and information confidentially and in line with the Data Protection Act.

The successful candidate would have:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Workload and project management skills.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Ability to deal with constituents and community interest groups in a helpful and sympathetic manner.
  • A good working knowledge of local issues in Mid Bedfordshire.
  • An enthusiasm for helping people and a willingness to pitch in where needed.
  • Flexibility to attend surgeries or other relevant meetings.
  • Experience of advising in areas such as housing, welfare benefits or immigration issues or community advocacy work would be beneficial.
  • Sympathy to the aims and values of the Labour Party.

We value diversity and welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
