Job Details

Adam Jogee MP is looking for a parliamentary assistant with exceptional written and research skills and a sound knowledge of Parliament and parliamentary processes, to work with him to get things done for the people of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake research on relevant subjects as required by Adam.
• Deal with complex queries on the MPs' behalf, including drafting responses to constituents and stakeholders (policy casework).
• Management of Adam's Westminster and parliamentary diary. 
• Maintain and utilise knowledge of legislation going through Parliament, with a focus on anym impact on Newcastle-under-Lyme.
• Produce and present high-quality written reports, briefing notes and professional advice.
• Advise and ensure Adam is fully briefed on potential questions and motions before the House.
• Prepare and present results for the purposes of briefing notes for committees, parliamentary questions, articles and press releases.
• Work with the Communications Officer to research and monitor local, regional and national media coverage online and through social media and brief Adam on relevant issues.
• Prepare responses to media enquiries and draft press releases when required.
• There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours, including assisting with events and spending time in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Person specification

• Knowledge of the legislative process.
• Ideally, at least two years’ experience working in parliament for a Labour MP.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, and a keen attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, but also to support others as part of a team.
• Proficiency in MS Office and, ideally, experience of casework management software.
• Experience of media handling is preferable.
• Knowledgeable of the Labour Party, and sympathetic to our aims and objectives and able to articulate them.
• Ideally, some knowledge of one or more of the following areas: waste crime, SEND provision, the Commonwealth, higher education, the British/Irish relationship and our National Health Service.
