Length of Contract: Permanent

Job Details

Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Stamford, is looking for a Parliamentary Assistant who is passionate about the difference MPs can make to the lives of their constituents, with strong initiative and keen to make their mark, make the role their own, and be part of a busy team working on pressing national and local issues. A positive attitude and willingness to roll up your sleeves and learn is much more valuable than directly relevant experience.

This role is for someone who enjoys lots of independence and freedom with buckets of ideas and the drive, determination and attention to detail to lead them forward.

This role would suit a highly organised individual who can work independently, show initiative, and work well as part of a wider team. Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks are key. We particularly welcome applicants who are looking for practical professional experience with career ambitions within the public service and will offer support with their career development.

You will have opportunities beyond that typical to this role, from engaging with foreign affairs issues, to leading national and international campaigns, and working in a fast moving and demanding environment.

Interest in Rutland and Stamford, foreign affairs and national security very welcome

The role will include:

  • Diary management (attention to detail key)
  • Ensuring the Member is fully briefed ahead of all meetings and visits
  • Keeping the Member informed about upcoming Parliamentary business
  • Researching national and local policy issues
  • Responding to policy needs of constituents
  • Leading on a number of campaigns
  • Assisting with special projects
  • There will be a requirement to work outside of normal working hours and travel to the constituency.

Requirements:

  • A genuine interest in helping constituents and supporting the work of an MP
  • Exceptional organisational skills and ability to utilise systems and processes to prioritise tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to producing work that is precise and error-free
  • Outstanding written and verbal skills
  • Flexible, adaptable and calm in the face of a complex and dynamic workload
  • An interest in current affairs and sympathy with the aims and values of the Conservative Party

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
