Job Details

Amanda Hack MP is looking to recruit a Parliamentary Assistant to join her Westminster office on a full-time or part-time basis, supporting her work in Parliament and her role on the Work & Pensions Select Committee.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure Member is accurately informed on key issues
  • Assist in writing external communications including speeches for the MP
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc. This would include issues of importance both nationally and in the local constituency
  • Diary Management
  • Give advice on policy issues
  • Have working knowledge of relevant legislation and upcoming business including how they impact on the constituency
  • Maintain positive on-going relationships with all parties including members of the public, groups, suppliers and Westminster where required
  • Monitor local, regional and national media coverage and brief the MP on relevant issues
  • Prepare and present briefing notes for committees, press releases, parliamentary questions etc.
  • There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work occasionally
  • To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
  • Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed
  • Work with colleagues in communications/casework to identify potential impacts from the research work and disseminate them effectively

Personal specification

Essential

  • Previous research experience and knowledge of public policy
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce high-quality briefings and comms material

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the North West Leicestershire constituency and the issues it faces
  • Previous experience in a sector pertinent to Amanda’s role on the Work & Pensions Select Committee, and/or demonstrable knowledge of relevant areas of policy
  • Previous experience working in an MPs office or a political environment
  • Previous experience working or volunteering for the Labour Party, and sympathy for its aims and values

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
