Job Details

Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central and West, is looking for a committed and hard-working Parliamentary Intern to support her in her Parliamentary duties.

Good political awareness is important, as is a decent overall understanding of current political issues. Experience in politics is not necessary, but sympathy with the aims and principles of the Labour Party is essential.

The successful candidate will have an understanding of the issues important to Newcastle and the North East.

Chi is the Chair of the House of Commons Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee, so the successful candidate will also have an interest in the science, research, and innovation sectors.

The successful applicant will be able to work independently when required and be a fast learner.

Evidence of having overcome adversity is welcomed.

The post is full time for six months.

Responsibilities will include:

• Assisting the Parliamentary Researcher.
• Carrying out research into policy issues.
• Supporting policy casework.
• Supporting media and social media activity.
• Working on policy campaigns.
• Monitoring developments in science, innovation and technology.
• Monitoring local and national issues.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
