Job Title: Senior Parliamentary Assistant

Salary: Competitive salary within IPSA pay-scales £38,404-£59,803 dependent on experience

Length of Contract: Permanent, after probation period

Job Details

This is a full-time position and will be based at Mary's Parliamentary office in Westminster. As well as managing and maintaining Mary's social media, website and e-newsletter to constituents, the job responsibilities are:
• To plan all communications and write articles, press releases, speeches, Parliamentary Questions and briefings to support Mary’s work as MP for Coventry East
• To proactively engage the national, regional and local media with Mary’s work and reactively handle enquiries from the media
• To undertake research, from primary and secondary sources, on complex subjects
• To respond effectively, confidentially, and courteously to all contacts from constituents, media, MPs, lobbyists and pressure groups on a wide range of topics
• To liaise with the constituency office to progress casework and policy work through liaison with local and national bodies, Government agencies and others
• To manage the day to day running of Mary’s Westminster Office, and one other member of staff, handling all visitors, correspondence and telephone calls
• To monitor Bills, Early Day Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates, etc
• To assist with diary management

The ideal candidate will have:
• excellent research analysis and writing skills and acute attention to detail
• working knowledge of standard office practices and computer packages
• experience of political speechwriting and have written articles for publication
• good knowledge of the policy making process
• good communication and people skills and a working knowledge of social media and internet-based website programme such as Wordpress
• strong organisational research skills, excellent time management and able to produce high quality work under pressure.
• And be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the Labour Party and be politically aware.
• Previous experience of working in Parliament would be beneficial.

There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside normal working hours, including attending events with the MP in Westminster and Coventry as required.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
