Job Details

Marie Goldman, the Member of Parliament for Chelmsford, is looking for a highly motivated, proactive Senior Parliamentary Assistant to join her Westminster office.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead on project work as required; working with the MP, caseworkers and local party to identify, develop and execute both local and national campaigns.
  • Monitor media and parliamentary activity to identify opportunities for Marie to further constituency issues and campaigns in the media and in Parliament.
  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure the Member is accurately informed on key issues.
  • Support Marie’s Committee work, liaising with the related team as necessary.
  • To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House.
  • Diary management and event organisation.
  • Maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, including the impact on Chelmsford.
  • Draft parliamentary questions, Urgent Question applications, Early Day Motions and amendments to legislation.
  • Horizon-scanning, anticipate what advice or action may be required; proactively identify problems and resolve them.
  • Research local, regional or national issues to support the MPs' work.
  • Respond to routine correspondence and enquiries from constituents, the media, lobbyists and pressure groups.
  • To produce and present high quality written reports, briefing notes, and professional advice.
  • Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed.
  • Undertake supervisory responsibility, as required.
  • Occasional work from the Chelmsford office may be required.

There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours, including assisting with events with the MP as requested.

Skills required

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Parliamentary processes and procedure.
  • Previous experience in a similar role in Westminster is desirable.
  • Strong organisational skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well both in a team and independently, in a high-pressure environment.
  • Knowledge of, and confidence with, basic IT programmes.
  • The ability to take initiative and prioritise workload under pressure.
  • A commitment to the values of the Liberal Democrats.
