Job Details

Deirdre Costigan MP is looking for a Senior Parliamentary Assistant (Head of Office) to help achieve her priorities in serving the people of Ealing Southall. The successful candidate will share Deirdre's drive and determination to achieve change, from her work on the Health & Select Care Committee to her focus on equality at work, climate and environmental quality issues. There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the work of the team across parliament and the constituency so that Deirdre can deliver for Ealing Southall
  • Develop and implement strategies for pursuing Deirdre's objectives in parliament
  • Horizon-scanning, anticipating what advice or action may be required and proactively identifying problems and resolving them
  • Advise and ensure Deirdre is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
  • Work with the team to manage Deirdre's diary and inbox correspondence, including planning and organising meetings
  • Ensure Deirdre receives high quality written reports, briefing notes and professional advice and is accurately informed on key issues
  • Maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, including the impact on Ealing Southall
  • Research and monitor local, regional and national media coverage online and through social media and brief Deirdre on relevant issues
  • Support Deirdre's work on the Health & Social Care Committee

Personal Specification

  • Direct experience of using parliamentary processes and procedures to get things done
  • Strong political judgement and a firm understanding of current affairs and UK politics
  • Staff management or coordination experience
  • Well organised and able to prioritise, plan and respond flexibly to what is required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to speak to a variety of audiences
  • Highly motivated individual who can manage and prioritise a demanding workload, take initiative and meet deadlines
  • Use creative thinking to problem solve
  • Able to build relationships with key stakeholders 
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour party and able to articulate its key policy positions and values
