Job Details

Marie is looking for a highly motivated, pro-active individual to join her Westminster office as a Parliamentary Assistant, with the possibility of a Senior Parliamentary Assistant position depending on experience. We welcome candidates of varying experience levels and will tailor responsibilities accordingly.

At either level, the successful applicant would work closely with Marie to ensure that Marie is fully briefed on Parliamentary business, both in the Chamber and in relation to Marie’s work on the Modernisation Committee, Restoration & Renewal Boards and House of Commons Commission.

The Parliamentary Assistant will be responsible for preparing and delivering high-quality written reports and briefing notes, providing professional advice as needed, attending meetings with Marie, and carrying out any tasks that arise from those meetings.

Whilst researching local, regional or national issues in support of the MPs’ work, the individual must be able to horizon-scan, anticipating what advice or action may be required and proactively moving these actions forward.

Alongside diary management, the Parliamentary Assistant would be expected to work closely with the Office Manager, Caseworkers and Senior Communications Officer to identify, develop and execute both local and national campaigns.

Marie would like the Parliamentary Assistant to suggest and draft parliamentary questions, triage requests for signatures to amendments and EDMs and, as such, have a good knowledge of Parliamentary processes.

In the Senior Parliamentary Assistant role, Marie would expect a high level of autonomy and some supervisory responsibilities, to be discussed at interview stage.

• Strong knowledge of Parliamentary processes and procedure.

• Strong organisational skills, with excellent attention to detail.

• Ability to work well both in a team and independently, in a high-pressure environment.

• The ability to take initiative and prioritise workload under pressure.

• A commitment to the values of the Liberal Democrats, with an interest in the policy and work of the party.

  • A Senior Parliamentary Assistant would need to demonstrate solid experience of working in a similar role in Westminster.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
