Job Details

Deirdre Costigan MP is looking for a part time employed intern (3 days) to work in her Westminster office on a 3-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension thereafter. The successful applicant will help provide support to other members of the team across a range of areas, with a primary focus on delivering effective communication on several platforms, that reaches and engages her constituents. The applicant should be a strong communicator and someone who is able to work to deadlines in a fast-paced Parliamentary office. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the MP to ensure that the media strategy supports their priorities and enhances their visibility on key issues
  • Work with the team to ensure media communications and statements are updated and reflect the concerns of constituents
  • Assist with arrangements of events; this may include venue research and bookings; compiling and managing guest-lists and providing on-the-day event support as required.
  • Assist on projects
  • Assisting/learning how to manage casework
  • Attending surgeries and other meetings as part of training
  • Basic administrative support
  • Learning/assisting in appropriate research
  • Learning/assisting in drafting responses to constituents
  • Open handle and action email, post and social media enquiries 

Skills and Experience 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated and well organised individual who can manage and prioritise a demanding workload, take initiative and meet deadlines
  • Polite, confident and empathetic approach to public engagement
  • A good knowledge of current affairs and politics
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of software for graphic design, video captioning and creating content is desirable
  • Experience in using social media platforms
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Word and Outlook)
  • Sympathetic to the aims of the Labour Party 

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews will take place for shortlisted candidates at the end of April TBC. Looking for the right individual to start as soon as possible subject to clearance. We will be unable to respond to those who are unsuccessful at the first stage.
