Job Details

Fleur is recruiting a Parliamentary Assistant to join her busy and friendly Westminster office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively and energetically lead on research, planning and progression of Fleur’s main constituency campaigns.
  • Regularly draft speeches and briefings for Fleur on a range of policy issues including all that relate to Fleur’s parliamentary and constituency work.
  • Assist in writing external communications including speeches and letters.
  • Organise, attend and participate in meetings as appropriate.
  • Research and draft briefing packs for MPs, take notes of meetings and draft appropriate follow up correspondence.
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc. This would include issues of importance both nationally and in Putney.
  • Engage confidentially, professionally, with care and integrity with members of the public, through telephone enquiries, social media, email and face to face.
  • Ensure constituents receive prompt and thorough responses to policy enquiries, ensuring there are never outstanding policy enquiries.
  • Monitor local, regional and national media coverage and brief Fleur on relevant issues.
  • Take ownership of certain casework as required.
  • Attend meetings and events with Fleur and take detailed notes.
  • Manage and develop relationships with key stakeholders
  • Work proactively with Fleur’s communications team.

Person Specification

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organised with an ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • To be considered for the Parliamentary Assistant role, solid experience of working in a political environment such as in parliament, a government department, a charity, think tank or public affairs organisation is essential.
  • Commitment to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
  • Understanding of parliamentary procedure, debates, questions and legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of current UK political landscape.
  • Ability to work as part of a close-knit team and independently.
